If there's one thing that some of the participants in the top 20 places in the Stock Market Game have in common, it's holding crypto-assets. Bitcoin has been the star of recent weeks, benefiting from the well-known "Trump trades”, which have been sustained by US President-elect Donald Trump's support for the sector and the arrival in Congress of pro-crypto politicians. In the last seven days, the cryptocurrency has gained more than 20%.
For António Martins, a speech therapist in Porto, investing in cryptocurrencies, or riskier assets such as the stock market, "is the only way to get anywhere in this Game” and he believes that "the other participants are doing the same”. Francisco Silva, currently in ninth place, also believes that taking risks is the key to investing now and in the future. "The game gives strength to speculation, so I'm going to maintain this more speculative position,” he says. In addition to bitcoin, Francisco Silva's preferred asset is another cryptocurrency, ethereum - which has outperformed bitcoin in recent days, skyrocketing by more than 26%.
Leandro Alves, an architect, also sees no reason to change the structure of his portfolio, which is heavily invested (90%) in cryptocurrencies, mostly bitcoin. "Until there's another interesting asset that makes me change, I'll keep this position,” he explained. The remaining 10% is divided between the euro-dollar pair (at a time when the single European currency has been strongly pressured by a stronger "green note” - another of the "Trump trades”) and an ETF of small caps in the United States.
There are, however, those who are more cautious. In sixth place in the game, António Fernandes, a civil engineer, divides his attention between cryptocurrencies and stock indices, with greater exposure to the commodities sector, but says that "it's time to slow down”, even in the real world. Even so, "the idea is to maintain a risky position with high leverages”.
Jogo da Bolsa investors have been benefiting from exposure to higher risk, particularly in crypto-assets, but there are still three weeks to adjust positions and as the composition of Donald Trump's new administration begins to be revealed, investment decisions shouldn't be made any easier.
